It was Christmas 2017. This time we spent our Christmas in Penang. Strangely enough, we have been doing this for the past few years. After all, this is home to me, where I was born and grew up. There are many options where we could celebrate our Christmas in Penang.
We chose ParkRoyal Penang Resort located in the heart of Batu Ferringhi beach. Opened in 1990, it had a major makeover and reopened in November 2017. It looks amazing - stylish, classic and modern. On arriving at the hotel, it opens out with soaring ceiling making the entrance into the main foyer feels grand and luxurious with gentle sea breeze.
There are a few dining options at ParkRoyal Penang. We went to Cinnamon for the international Christmas dinner buffet. The restaurant has an indoor and outdoor seating. We chose the indoor seating in the comfort of the air-conditioned, shy from the warm, humid tropical weather of Penang. Although on this particular evening, the weather was pleasant and mildly warm and should be fine to sit outside.
My first impression of Cinnamon was it is a beautiful restaurant, draws you in with a sweeping view of the lushes garden and ocean. The interior decor attracts my attention. The combination and playfulness of the colours brown with black on the walls and cabinets, mirrors dancing in the reflection of people and lightings, brass and black frames, bright open kitchen with stainless steel bench and downlights strategically positioned create a warm, stylish restaurant in a casualness of a resort hotel.
We arrived timely at Cinnamon as booked for 7:30pm. The restaurant was well staffed. They were attentive and friendly. All the tables were decorated with Christmas party gifts. They were colourful and festive. The restaurant wasn't full when we were there. There were several empty tables. It was nice as it was not overly crowded except for 2 tables where the parents could care less with their young kids screaming out loud breaking the peacefulness and ambiance of the restaurant.
We had the most wonderful Christmas dinner buffet at Cinnamon. The staff service in the restaurant was top notched and attentive making our dining experience very special. The food was better than we expected - fresh and tasty. Our favourites were the grilled prawns cooked to perfection - succulent with a chargrilled flavour and the cod fish in ginger sauce was subtle and delicious. The Malaysian dishes were all delicious and great to have the different Malaysian relishes to go with the dishes. The dessert section with Christmas ornaments was a real treat and the little Christmas ornaments sitting on top of the desserts made the festive season even more special.
Other than the highly pretentious screaming kids with fake tears and inconsiderate parents, Cinnamon offers a great dining option for anyone who love international buffet in a nice restaurant overlooking the garden and ocean.
The Christmas international dinner buffet cost us $168 ringgits nett per person (food only). The price is slightly higher because of the festive season.
